In the Kwara State House of Assembly election, which took place last Saturday, the All Progressives Congress (APC) won 23 seats while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured only one seat.
The 24 members who served in the 9th legislative Assembly between 2019 and 2023 were all male.
However, in the upcoming 10th legislative session of the Assembly, five women were elected, including Rukayat Shittu, Owode/Onire constituency; Arinola Lawal, Ilorin East constituency; Medinat AbdulRaheem, Lanwa/ Ejidongari constituency; Aishat Babatunde-Alanamu, Ilorin North-West constituency; and Mariam Aladi, Ilorin South constituency.
They will be inaugurated in June this year.
It is noteworthy that a former Commissioner for Women Affairs in the state had earlier raised concerns about the fact that the current Chairman of the Committee for women affairs in the state House of Assembly is a man, and had questioned whether he had gone through the pains of child-bearing, monthly periods, lactation, and breastfeeding.
